Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?

According to the National Notary Association, a Notary Public is an official of integrity appointed by state government — typically by the secretary of state — to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents.

WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE CURRENT ID FOR A NOTARIZATION?

A credible witness can verify the signer identity in the state of Texas. The witness must know the Notary or signer personally enough to swear or affirm the signer’s identity before the Notary Public. A Credible Witness must present a valid unexpired ID issued by the government federal or state that contains the photo and signature of the witness (1 TAC 87.40[2] and 87.1[1]) to the Notary.

CAN A NOTARY PUBLIC GIVE ME LEGAL ADVICE OR DRAFT LEGAL DOCUMENTS?

No, Notary Public are not attorneys, and therefore cannot offer any legal advice. This includes providing or preparing documents on your behalf. Before scheduling your appointment, consult with an attorney for legal questions and to ensure you have the correct document for your situation.

WHAT ARE ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF IDENTIFICATION?

An U.S. government identification that is current. Including but not limted to military IDs, U.S. Passport, state- issued identification cards, and drivers’ licenses.

WHAT FEES DO YOU CHARGE FOR YOUR NOTARY SERVICES?

All notaries in the State of Texas must comply with state law regarding notary fees. Every time I apply the notary stamp I can charge $6, plus a travel fee. There may be some additional fees and charges for other services provided. Call or email before an appointment to get an exact quote on the fee price. You can email brittanyr@notareed.com for the fee schedule.
